really liked it

3.5 stars, and I marked it down from 4 primarily because of the very poor editing which resulted in lots of repeated words and that really, really bugged me.

But aside from that, I enjoyed this a lot. Having recently watched the BBC4 series about the Venetian police, it took a bit to get their images out of my head, but the setting was absolutely great. I liked Brunetti and the insights you got into his family life, and I thought the tongue in cheek way that the whole police system and local corruption was dealt with brought great humour to the story. The story itself was an old-fashioned detective one, which is just what I like too, with no outragiously-complex twists and turns and not too much blood and gore and lots of interesting characters. This is the first of the series I've read but it definitely won't be the last. It would make excellent tv.
