Mindy Kaling is a genuine crack-up. She plays Kelly Kapoor on The Office, convinces you that you want to be her best friend in Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and played Matt Damon in a highly successful play she wrote and starred in with her post-college roommate. Kaling's book is on par with Tina Fey's Bossypants: both are divided between geeky childhood stories and dishing on behind-the-scenes at SNL, The Office, etc, and both are chuckle-worthy.
Her book is a great summer read, especially if you watch The Office - I've always wondered what Mindy Kaling was really like, as Kelly Kapoor's character is out-of-the-park wacko. Mindy's fashion sense is just as well-developed as Kelly's, but that's about where the comparisons end. The real Mindy is willing to post the photo (right) on the back of her book, along with the caption "The author as child star of the TLC series Androgynous Kids and Puppets, the less-successfull predecessor of Toddlers and Tiaras" - hilarious.
