I know that my compulsion to hate-read these books is far more perverted than anything Anita ever gets up to in this series, but there it is. I almost feel that I am performing a service for those of you who have had the strength to stop reading the books themselves, yet may feel the danger of back-sliding just to see what is up in the lives of Anita and her horde of vaginal slaves. The answer is nothing. Nothing is up that remotely matters or makes sense.

I'm not going to mark anything in here as a "spoiler," because I don't even know what that means in the context of these books anymore. However, if the fact that I am going to quote parts of the book and that those parts of the book may reveal some of the things that happen in the book will upset you, stop reading now. You have no one but yourself to blame if you continue. Likewise, I guess I should add that if crimes against the profession of editing, the English language, and the Aristotelian Unities upset you, you should also consider yourself warned, because what follows must necessarily be very disturbing, indeed.

Let's first give credit where credit is due...the first half of the book takes place outside of Anita's bedroom, with her doing her job. The Marshall job, anyway. There's a throwaway reference to Animator's, Inc., at one point, mostly to just say that she's never there anymore. Remember how that used to be a thing in this series? But not anymore. This time, Anita is helping break up a hostage situation involving a bunch of vamps who appear to be members of the Undead Tea Party, being composed primarily of old people and near-children who were too young to know what they were doing when they changed over, and only want to yell "FREEDOM!" at everyone else. This is not really all that important, actually. I mean, they provide the background for some of the Dramatic Events in the story that cause Anita to have to kick ass and talk about her weapons and her height and how strong she is like always, but that's it. Consider them not really all that material to the story.

We DO get to walk into the building where they are holed up, though, and get one of those glorious paragraphs where Hamilton tries to get all deep and descriptive, and ends up making no kind of sense whatsoever. To wit:

The room looked like a set for a slasher flick, with dirty walls; pale paint that might have started as white had flaked away from the bricks, so that the paint debris lay at the base of the walls as if something big had clawed at the walls. The question was, had it been clawing to get in, or get out?

First of all, no, that is not the question. Nothing was clawing, in or out. It's just some paint flecks. (Also, if there HAD been clawing, the fact that all of the paint flecks are on the floor inside the building would be a significant clue that the clawing was coming from inside the building as well. I mean, to anyone who happened to be a professional investigator of some sort. Or someone who had ever read a mystery story before.) Finally, way to use the word "walls" THREE TIMES IN ONE SENTENCE. Those familiar with the series will not be surprised to learn that Hamilton's tendency to use the same words repeatedly, and even to seemingly cut and paste whole paragraphs from previous books to re-use several times in the course of each "new" volume has not abated even a little. She also continues her odd quirk of picking a new phrase that everyone in each book suddenly decides to use all the time, in all sorts of situations, and then never use again in subsequent books. In this edition, that phrase is "ass deep in alligators." People cannot stop talking about the damn alligators and their relative proximity to the gluteus maximi of everyone involved. Enjoy it while you can; in the next book no one will have ever heard of alligators.

Also, you will find this paragraph, worded almost exactly the same way, in at least two different parts of the book:

His face already held that darkness, that surety that most men's eyes get at some point when the clothes are coming off and the sex is happening. It's not exactly possessive, but yet it is, but it is predatory .... It wasn't a shapeshifter look, or a vampire look, it was a male look. Maybe women had their own version, but I rarely saw my own face in a mirror during sex, and I had only one other woman to compare to, and she didn't have a look like this one.

Also, lest we forget..."Gods," he said, "I'd forgotten how tight you stay even wet." I don't think we've fully explored the question of whether Anita's vampire marks come with a side-effect of Iron Snatch. There can be no other explanation. On the subject of the vampire marks, though, we do get this:

We'd finally figured out it was Jean-Claude's vampire marks that kept me from being able to shapeshift for real. Modern lycanthropy wasn't contagious to vampires, and I was just too close to being a vampire thanks to his marks, and my own necromancy. Ancient-strain lycanthropy had been contagious to the undead.

What the...one of the longest-standing, enduring, unexplained things in the Anita-verse, and that's ALL the explanation we get for it? Three sentences? Nothing about how we learned this, or from whom? Maybe I missed something in one of the past books, but really, it seems unlike Hamilton not to drive a point like that home with repeated paragraphs for several books in a row. It seems more like she got tired of trying to think of an explanation for why Anita was like this, and decided just to throw this paragraph out there to get rid of it. She needs the space to cut-and-paste more identical sex scenes and comments about how tight and wet Anita is AT ALL TIMES, dammit!

In further news of writerly laziness, it is determined that maybe Asher should go be the master of a new city, because he is a big pissy baby and everyone is sick of him. What new city, you ask? A new city. One that is new. Asher and his New City are mentioned forty-eleven time, and the place is never named, although it is clear they are referring to a specific place and not just "somewhere else." For the love of...just THROW A DART AT A MAP if it is so hard to decide where to put him! Topeka! Ypsilanti! Boca Raton! Just pick one! It doesn't matter, except in the way that it draws the reader's attention to the fact that you can't be bothered to put any effort into your writing anymore!

Finally, just for the pure WTF-ery of it, I present the following statement:

It just giggled me, and I was starting to own the things that made me happy, not because it made sense, or was horribly important, but it was just a happy.

I have no idea what that means. It looks like a sentence that was run through Google Translate a few times, from English to Thai to Flemish to Portuguese to Farsi and back to English again. Ladies and gentlemen, the word-stylings of Laurell K. Hamilton, alleged native English speaker.

Now I need to go lie down with a cool compress on my brow so that I can forget about all of this nonsense until the next book comes out.

Jamie Excellent, Lorena!

message 2: by Emma (new)

Emma Hilarious review! I can't believe these are still going. I stopped at 10 I think, they got so bad (and icky).

message 3: by Wealhtheow (new)

Wealhtheow "Hate read" is the best way to describe it! I've been reading her recent books (I took a break for sanity's sake) with similar bemused, horrified fascination.

Good to know Anita's height, strength, pallor, and the various descriptors of her poontang remain front and center in the narrative. She really does mention how tight she is every single novel--maybe Hamilton has gotten snarky emails about Anita's wide array of sex partners and feels this is the best way to rebut them? I dunno.

I am actually glad I don't understand the "it was just a happy" paragraph. I feel like if I did, it would be a sign that something was terrifyingly wrong with my brain.

Also, Lorena, you do realize that the more amusing your reviews of Hamilton's novels are, the more we'll pressure you to read more of them? Beware!

message 4: by Margali (new)

Margali Promise me you'll keep reading these, so I don't have to! Great review!

message 5: by Krissie (new)

Krissie "Iron snatch", god I laughed so hard...

message 6: by Coleen (new)

Coleen lol I agree with Margali thanks for reading them so I dont have only stopped with the last one and this review has just finalised my lack of interest

message 7: by Cathy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Cathy Thanks for the laughs, truly appreciating snarky reviews are one of the best reasons to continue to read this series. I couldn't do it without the generous support of my local library though, it's been a long time since I've been able to rationalize the price of the books, despite the fun.

message 8: by Heather (new) - rated it 3 stars

Heather I will say, alligators are actually from the early books--back when they were great reads. It's not new.

And you missed that Asher left, but the rest of the paragraph is her asking if they can let him leave, even for a month. It's clear he's still there, but she flat out said he left. *sigh*

message 9: by Cher (new)

Cher Great review.Thank you for reading, so I didn't have too.Good to kow I haven't missed anything in the last three books.

message 10: by ~ Ina (new) - rated it 2 stars

~ Ina I'm all with you on the quest to live through this series! hate-readers unite! thanks for this lovely review, you captured my thoughts exactly! (:

message 11: by Jenn (new) - rated it 2 stars

Jenn I totally missed the explanation of why she can't/won't shift. It just blended in with the ho-hum I felt with this story, which breaks my heart a bit because I did love this series so much. Once upon a time...10-ish books ago.

message 12: by slayra (new)

slayra Eh. I gave up reading this. Was never a fan to begin with, so it wasn't a great loss. But really, the quotes are... very bad. I'm glad to see no-one understood the 'happy' quote; I would be wondering about my english (my second language) otherwise. But her writing is horrid. If she wasn't an established author no publisher would get near her latest books. At least I'd like to think so. O.o

message 13: by Debi (new) - rated it 2 stars

Debi Ash It took me over 10 days to read this and I drudged through hoping it would get better. It is almost like LKH is trying to meet a quota with the publisher and has lost Anita in there somewhere - I think its time to end the series; truthfully.

message 14: by Rosezetta (new) - rated it 2 stars

Rosezetta I think it is time for Anita to give up the cop job... there are so many other directions Hamilton could go with Anita. Anita has all this power, but all she does is shoot now. She doesn't even do anything physical anymore. I would've loved to see a scene where all of'em Asher, Nathaniel, Micah, especially Jean Claude was in a situation where they had no other choice but to fight their way out. How many times can you talk about them being beautiful? Apparently not enough!!! We already know that. For the ppl picking the book up for the first time, mentioning it every chapter is still over kill, once in the entire book is enough. We die hard fans keep buying her books, because we love Anita...but this book was basically a book of descriptions. It saddens me to be considering actually putting this series down.

message 15: by Michelle (new)

Michelle I've heard so much about these books that I was thinking of starting the series, but after reading your review (which was hilarious btw), I'm not so sure anymore! :P

Rosezetta Michelle L. wrote: "I've heard so much about these books that I was thinking of starting the series, but after reading your review (which was hilarious btw), I'm not so sure anymore! :P"

Michelle, all of them aren't bad. Don't let all the bad reviews sway you. This particular book was just plain horrible. It's 21 books in the series, you are bound to have some bad ones in the bunch. Everyone says the first six to ten books are awesome. Personally for me, I didn't really get into the series until book four. I actually read the first three and wasn't very interested in Anita Blake at all. It wasn't until book 4 I fell in love with the series. In the beginning it was awesome plots, and lots of drama, fighting, etc... not so much these days. But still, I encourage you to at least give the first ten books a try.

Emma Michelle L. wrote: "I've heard so much about these books that I was thinking of starting the series, but after reading your review (which was hilarious btw), I'm not so sure anymore! :P"

Michelle, if you've not read any then I really would recommend giving the series a go. I gave up at 10 (I think) because it started to gross me out but the early books are all about a kick ass empowering heroine and so amazing.

Rosezetta Debi wrote: "It took me over 10 days to read this and I drudged through hoping it would get better. It is almost like LKH is trying to meet a quota with the publisher and has lost Anita in there somewhere - I ..."

Debi, I don't know if you are following her on fb, but if you are, have you seen where she is excited about starting the next Anita book? I just rolled my eyes. Excited? After putting out this crappy of a book...I am thinking psych meds. It really pisses me off, cause the darn book was not cheap #1...#2 it's like she cares more about describing ppl, places than an actual plot. I am with you...she either needs to end the series, or kick her muse ass, so maybe Anita can do something other than admire the beauty of her lovers.
I also think she is letting the success of the sell get to her. Just because you sold X amount of books in a week, doesn't make the book a success, if only ten out of thousand people actually liked the book. I cannot even imagine that many actually enjoying this book.
If this is what we have to look forward to in future books, I wish she would just end it.

The first three are quite good. Five, Six and Seven get progressively ... not so good. I forget which one actually became a "Don't bother" but I know I read at least 2 that I hated. I never made it to 10. 7 might have been the last I started ... I know whichever one it was, I didn't get past the first chapter.

I think ten of any series is probably three too many.

Maria Schneider Michelle L. wrote: "Maria wrote: "Michelle L. wrote: "I've heard so much about these books that I was thinking of starting the series, but after reading your review (which was hilarious btw), I'm not so sure anymore! ..." Probably the only series I've made it to ten is Elizabeth Peters. And the quality never declined, although the series became less about the original main character and moved to her son. Good stuff.

I stayed with Janet Evanovich through 10, but yeah, that could have stopped around 8 and would have been enough.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any others where I've made it past 5 or 6.

message 23: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Mrs. pollifax?

message 24: by Maria (new)

Maria Schneider Michelle L. wrote: "Mrs. pollifax?"

Haven't read all of those yet. I have read several of Dorothy Gilman's books--but not all of them are in the series. She has several very good stand alone novels as well as the Mrs. Pollifax series!!!

Yup. And all six of the Vicky Bliss. She stopped that series at 6 I believe. If there were 7, then I read all 7. :>)

When we did the buddy read of Borrower of the Night on my blog, one of the blog readers wrote me and said she's from Norway and apparently some of her friends tell her how much she doesn't look like Vicky. :>) She has added the whole series to her TBR!

Kaza I sympathize with your inability to break away from the series.

"It just giggled me, and I was starting to own the things that made me happy, not because it made sense, or was horribly important, but it was just a happy."

That was hilariously bad. How does Laurell sell so many books? lol

message 35: by Gogo (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gogo Asher I haven't read this one yet(only read part of your review). I am waiting for my mother to finish reading so I can steal the library book. I use to buy the books because I loved them so much and I reread them. but I have stopped because they started to get so bad. But I keep reading hoping that they will go back to when they were good cause the books don't suck because she could never tell a good story, she just lost her way.

Good point! However, the last book I bought was The Harlequin (with AB series). I just get the books from the library now. I refuse to support the deterioration of the writing.

message 38: by Greer (new)

Greer This is hilariously accurate! Iron snatch, hee hee! I love this series but find myself rolling my eyes at the endless repetition as well. Doesn't she realize that if she's so sick of writing it she has to cut and paste, then maybe her readers are sick of it too?! Frustrating cuz I really like the first half of the series.

message 39: by Karen (new) - rated it 2 stars

Karen Hahaha I LOVED your. very ACCURATE. review and your terminology "iron -snatch " made me burst out laughing.

message 42: by Jen (new) - rated it 1 star

Jen Kaza wrote: "That was hilariously bad. How does Laurell sell so many books? lol"

Especially since she's become such a diva. I read a blog post from her where she "wanted to set people straight" about the Merry series and how it wasn't ending. She basically told people who were concerned that Merry was finished that they should just be quiet and she'll write one when she's ready. She said she needed a break.

And "iron snatch" has me laughing each time I think of it. It ranks right up there with the quote from True Blood from Pam regarding Sookie's super snatch.

message 43: by Shelah (new)

Shelah Thank you!! From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much from saving me from buying this book. I wanted to check in and see if anything had gotten better. I bought Skin Trade last, read twenty pages into it and never picked it up again. I miss the old Anita Blake. I'm not really a porn person, when the porn involves doing MANY people at one time. This was very well done.

message 44: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie Thank you! I was tempted and almost lulled to at least read it in the store and not buy the book but now I'm not going to waste what would be hours of my time. I can imagine wanting to rip my eyeballs now..

Also:
It looks like a sentence that was run through Google Translate a few times, from English to Thai to Flemish to Portuguese to Farsi and back to English again.
Pure genius!

message 49: by Anna (new)

Anna Well thank you so much for this. I laughed too much and you've made me put aside my Anita cravings for another 6 months. I finished incubus Dreams before I threw my hands, and book, up in despair.

message 50: by Ela (new)

Ela That last quote you put in was excellant! I can't beleive any english speaking person allowed that to actually be published! It sounds like LKH has just shoved a load of random words into a sentence!
