Driven by the changing wing and fear of the Black Men Vianne Rocher (one of her many names), has wandered for years. But when her little daughter Anouk urges her to stay in a little provincial French town, she opens up a chocolaterie across from the church in the middle of Lent – and sparks a war with the curé. With her knack for guessing everyone’s favorites and sensing other’ emotions, Vianne offers sweet indulgence and a new, unconventional way of solving problems – because for Vianne the only thing that matters is being happy.

As literary fiction goes the title of this is perfect. Sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter, the rich writing style – at times almost poetic – coats the throat smooth, warm and sensual. It’s beautifully written – you can almost taste the confections, smell the warm café. This is one of those books I want to buy – to be able to read snippets aloud whenever I want.
