This short novel is very hard to describe but I really enjoyed reading it. The writing is very beautiful, minimal, detached but caring. The author takes the tale through unexpected twists and turns. Just when the reader settles in, thinking one event is going to be the main focus, off the tale goes in another direction. I found it full of surprises. The characters are multidimensional in their 1950s way, repressed and yet yearning. There are some very funny passages that had me laughing out loud. Not a single character is simply evil. Each one comes with his/her own perspective and flawed behaviors and weaknesses. Most are well-intentioned with an inner sense of decency. The one very mild criticism I have is that the novel did not seem English to me despite the setting. As I read the dialogue, it sounded very American, not English, despite the formality.
