I find Kristin Cashore to be a really interesting writer even though, at this point, I'm more intrigued by her exploration of themes than I am compelled by the actual stories. Basically, these are all stories about learning how to wield power responsibly (the villains are people who use power only for their own benefit). I found "Fire" a little more involving than "Graceling," because I think the book is grappling with something a little more difficult and also more original -- basically, it follows the idea of a princess who is so beautiful everybody is magically compelled to fall in love with her to its logical conclusion, which is that the power is dangerous and frightening. I also thought the characters and their tangled family dynamic were more interesting here than in "Graceling," which basically only had a couple fully developed characters.
