My high school sophomore English teacher, Mr. Blumenschein, assigned this. I loved Mr. Blumenschein and probably would have loved anything he assigned, but this is the book that stands out, the one I still remember. It's not entirely unlike Roald Dahl's Boy (young English boy, wacky adventures with family -- not the same! but chances are if you liked that, you'll like this, too), except I wanted to be the young Gerry Durrell. It's hilarious, wonderful, magical. I might describe it as better than HDTV.
