This one was so much better than the previous few Lowell books that I read. In fact, I had completely dropped this author for a good few years (which is an extremely hard and very unusual thing for me to do, especially since I've been reading Lowell since I was a teenager). The thing that compelled me to pick this one up is the whole Mayan history/ 2012 end of the world thing. When I read reviews of this book, the biggest complaint most readers had was that there was too much Mayan history and not enough romance in the novel. This is exactly what tipped me over the edge to pick this book up. I actually enjoyed the history and mythology/mysticism Lowell explored in this novel and what I didn't enjoy was the stupid romance that, in my opinion, slowed down the plot.

Overall, this was an okay read, but compared to the last few novels, it was one of the better (but not good) Lowell books.
