A brutal, beautifully-written coming-of-age story. The Virgin Suicides shows our human tendency towards nostalgia and the constant search for meaning to everything, even if it may be meaningless. The suicides themselves are not surprising. Eugenides tells you they will happen from the very beginning, but by looking at the suicides in relation to their own lives, the narrators (a collective we) actually tell us more about their world and their own experiences in it than they do about the girls who are to be their subject matter. It's really a brilliant book. One of the best I have read in quite some time.
