Frances Mayes writes beautifully. Perhaps too beautifully. We see, smell, hear, and eat -- especially eat. The details are all gorgeous and I'm ready to move to Italy tomorrow. But eventually, I began to feel claustrophobic. The narrator is well-to-do upper middle class American. That's fine. But I began to feel trapped in her persona and her perspective. Best to read this book occasionally, a chapter on a rainy Vermont night when you'd rather be somewhere the sun shines. But not all at once....
