Continuing my trek outside the sphere of my American ignorance, I read a galley I had picked up of this book mainly because the cover begat questions from the start. I cannot say I enjoyed the book in the sense that it took me away from my cares. Rather, it paled them in comparison. I enjoyed the perspective on places different from my backyard, even if the writing style and very dialect-based language left me losing track in some places. Regarding the subject matter - be prepared for the human aspect of the underside of many a place or tragic happening. This is what was truly engaging about the stories; the children whose perspectives run the show are endearing, nauseating, hopeful in hopelessness, and called to experience things that my sheltered life has no context to understand other than what is given to me on the page.
