I am sad to say I have not yet read Between Shades of Gray. But after reading Out of the Easy, I will for sure be returning to Ruta's first novel. Out of the Easy was a really wonderful novel. It was eloquent, simple yet complicated, wonderful characters, difficult relationships, and a unique setting in terms of what is out there for YA literature. Adults will love this novel as well. Set in post-war New Orleans, the city struggles with hiding its not so splendid side of tourism amongst scandal and class-clashes. I had the opportunity to meet Ruta and tell her how much I loved her book and she was such a wonderful person. She is so enthusiastic about her projects and her fans, and it was a pleasure to read this book! I highly recommend it to any historical fiction enthusiast and anyone who has not tried her writing yet.
