I read this twelve years ago as a sophomore in high school and found it impressive. I reread it recently and was shocked by the racism, ignorance, and sweeping generalizations. Hoffer is not an academic - he's not even that educated, as he spent 25 years of his life as a shoreman. There are genuine insights in this book, but overall, it's far too broad to be taken seriously.
