Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power
by Rachel Maddow
by Rachel Maddow
When I think of Rachel Maddow, or a book she's written, I would never expect a supporting word from Roger Ailes, Chairman and CEO of Fox News. Yet even he added a review to the book jacket, stating that "Drift" is a book worth reading. Who would have guessed?
This book is non-partisan, simply examining how military action in this country has drifted away from the intent of the Constitution, which puts declaration of war in the hands of Congress, not the Executive Branch. Recent experience shows a reversal of that original intent. Another important point she makes, and worth repeating, is how the military burden is borne by the 1% in the military, while the rest of the Country is basically unaffected. Past wars brought tax increases to pay for them, or the selling of War Bonds, or even some restriction of availability of basic goods. Recent experience requires none of those sacrifices by the public, as she correctly points out. She also points out how many basic military services and actions are now being Outsourced to contract services, and discusses the drawback to that recent tendency. All in all, a very readable and very worthwhile book.
