The protagonist, Joanna Archer, is a flawed heroine, which makes her very realistic. On the eve of her 25th birthday, she learns that she is not quite human. The book starts out with her announcing that she is dead, though you will learn it is not in the conventional way.

She learns that she is a superhero, but caught in the middle between Light and Shadows. Light is who she wants to be, and she joins their group as the Archer, as she is a Sagittarius.

If you think you have problems with your family, you will feel lucky after reading about Joanna's. Her father loathes her. Her mother left her. All she has left is her sister, Olivia, with whom she has a great relationship, but from whom she couldn't be more different.

I personally don't read comic books/graphic novel, but I love that the mythology of the superheroes is recorded in them in this book.

The writing is sharp and witty. You immediately care about the characters and can't put the book down. And - no vampires!! (not that there's anything wrong with vampires - but it's nice to have a new type of superhero.)
