I reread Little Women before I read this, just to make sure I was catching all the references. I LOVED how wild Marmee was in this one, at least before she got married and had babies. Brooks took great liberties with the Alcott version, but I didn't mind at all. I loved the sense of time and place. Concord of Emerson and Thoreau! All the political passions. But at the heart this is about people who love each other but don't understand each other. Each of the parents misinterpret and misunderstand the other. Each takes actions he or she assumes will meet with approval, and each is sorely mistaken. I enjoyed the voices of each, seeing the world through his and her eyes. I believe this could be read and appreciated without deep knowledge of the original, but I highly recommend reading both.
