Very well-written with a complex, interesting, and unique mythology. Definitely not your typical paranormal story. For thoughtful readers and lovers of moody, immersive writing. I liked how different this story was, how well-crafted it was, and how it completely bucked my expectations. Fama backs up her complicated plot with very, very good writing, and that's just not something I can say a whole lot.

I also have to say, reading this book while my ears were full of fluid (fighting a sinus infection) was a TRIP, especially when (view spoiler)

My main quibble is that Hester seemed a bit dense sometimes due to the alternating timelines. The reader knows a lot of what happened in the past before Hester figures it out, and with some of the information, it seemed like Hester's ignorance went on a bit too long and it became tedious. But otherwise, a great read.

The cover on the ARC is terrible. The model is certainly not one of Fama's mermaid creations. It looks like a Sports Illustrated shoot.
