I suppose it's a coming-of-age story. Little kids ought to be able to get the point if they can wade through the awkward phrasing. Little Scarecrow Boy's show of initiative is good but the text implies that learning has an ultimate or terminal nature. Scarecrow Boy goes singularly after his one goal and then THAT'S IT! ALL DONE! FIERCEST SCARECROW EVER!
