Tony Horwitz travels all across the U.S. in search of the forgotten explorers who came before the Mayflower. The book is interesting and well-written and in a few places quite funny. He takes the reader through a lot of history that most people don't know about how the U.S. was mapped, explored and conquered. He tries to show both the explorers' and the natives' sides so that you can make your own decisions as to good and bad. He shows the very strong feelings some people still hold about the settlement of the Southwest too. It's not a quick read, but it is worth it if you want to learn more about very early U.S. history.
