I won this novel through the goodreads giveaway, and being a big fan of historical fiction, was thrilled to receive it. It's a fictionalized account of 2 real life families, living 50 years apart, that made San Miguel Island their home. Each family comes to view the island from a very different perspective; one as bleak, cold, desolate, lonely and the other as freedom, home, paradise. The novel is slow moving, but the author's descriptive writing style and eloquent use of the english language captures the reader's attention. I just loved it and have now become a fan of T. C. Boyle.
