I basically fell in love with Kel *instantly* and can't wait to read the rest of this series. It was fairly predictable, storywise, but nicely done with a lot of engaging characters.

Erin I like these, but don't love them the way I love the Alanna books and the Beka books. I do, though, really like that Pierce is telling stories that go beyond the "first (and only) girl" trope. I mean, the _second_ person is interesting too, and she really shows Kel connecting & beginning to lead a broader social movement, whereas Alanna wasn't (and maybe couldn't be) as conscious of that.

Caroline Alanna's great but I think Kel is even more my character type, with stoicism and insider/outsider status and hatred of bullies. I cried actualfax tears when she gave her indignant speech about how knights should use their power to protect people weaker than them.
