I wanted to like this as much as The Sun Also Rises, but I don't. I still really love Hemingway's style and prose, but the characters in this novel are hard to like. It's also a pretty grim statement about love and loss and the pain of war and all that, and I think the novel offers a lot to be discussed and interpreted. But I really feel like this should be a three and half star book for me--I liked it and appreciated it, but that darn Catherine Barkley really bothered me. I agree with a statement I came across made by some literary critic: "Hemingway is at his best when he writes about men without women." So true.
