Giovanni's Room is a good novel, at times a great novel, but I don't love it as much as my friends and colleagues do. There are no interesting women characters--Hella is the least interesting among them. The sexuality of male interaction is handled beautifully; Baldwin is expertly subtle and shrewdly suggestive.

I'm a bigger fan of Baldwin's nonfiction than I am of his fiction.
