I've read all Donna VanLiere's books and always enjoy them. This one was her best yet. She perfectly captures the mood of a small 1950 southern community. I know because I lived in one. Ivorie Walker is considered an old maid by her community even though she's only 30 years old. She has recently lost her parents, with whom she lived, and she is at odds because she is so lonely. One night she discovers a small feral boy robbing her vegetable garden. She begins a relationship with this little abused boy and her life is suddenly full. VanLiere writes with such a depth of emotion, the reader feels like they're standing there in each scene. Chapters are shared between 3 folks in the story and it's absolutely amazing. It will break your heart so have your tissues ready. This is a story of redemption, love and acceptance.
