I experienced this as an audiobook. I enjoyed each word. Richard Jury, Scotland Yard detective, captivated me instantly with his reluctant belief in a literal "shaggy dog" story. The wit of the bantering dialog, the clever weaving of a plot that flows and then suddenly hits a snag and begins to ebb, and the English accent of the narrator created a fun listen for me. The story starts out with a friendly, yet mysterious slant; but, it quickly moves into a serious murder mystery. The quirky and never dull supporting characters add a deeper dimension of enjoyment. Martha Grimes snagged me, just as Jury was snagged by the mysterious stranger. I want to read more of this series.
