Brightwater Blood by Shona Husk

Brightwater Blood ended up being a short story, but it was a good one.

Lionshifter Lachlan is a tracker for the Council and his job is to find out if the Brightwater witch twins have been performing illegal magic. He tracks them down only to find one of the sisters dead in a burnt out casting circle, and while he's standing over the body the other turns up and shoots him. Now seriously wounded, and with cataclismic danger on the horizon, Lachlan has to get the remaining twin to reevaluate everything she's believed and to trust him or they both will die.

I really liked this story - I like Husk's Goblin series but I love shifters and magic even more - and there was enough backstory in Brightwater Blood to give a sense of the world and of who both of the leads were even in the short space of the story. It also helped that Husk didn't try to squeeze in a HEA just the promise of one and it was fairly mild sensuality-wise for a story with sex magic (kisses count) and in which the hero spends most of his time naked.

I would read more in this world, but I think it is a stand alone - need to go hunting now to find out.
