Once the progress of science has marched beyond a work of science fiction, the fiction must be strong enough to stand on its own.

That, I think, is where The Island of Dr. Moreau falls short. The tale of a rational Brit marooned on an island of grossly-twisted monsters, the story fails to deliver any compelling lesson about the human condition. It flirts with morality and man's hubris, but ultimately shies away from any horrible insight into humanity's flaws.

That said, it is a classic bit of science fiction and a good tale overall -- just not H.G. Well's best work.
