I was excited to receive this book in the First Reads Giveaway because I am a fan of historical fiction about British royalty. This is the imagined story of the early life of Wallis Simpson, the American socialite who would capture the heart of Prince Edward. The story explores in great detail Wallis’ family dynamics and upbringing and her first marriage to a military officer, and spends considerably less time on the period leading to her introduction to Prince Edward. The author’s writing is very descriptive and romantic; in fact, the author is a former chair of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and has been recognized by the group for her previous works of historical fiction.
