The most magical thing about this book is the title, which would be less misleading if it were renamed THE YEAR OF TRYING TO MOURN. It is a book written after the death of a beloved husband and death will visit us all. I did appreciate some of the research Didion compiled on grief and her poignant revelations, but it was definitely a downer, especially because some of her year was spent in the Beverly Wilshire or reminiscing about her luxurious vacation destinations or homes. It is in these almost forty years of memories of her late husband John that we remember to cherish our conversations with our loved ones in the event that they are our last.
