As someone who doesn't generally enjoy scary stories I almost didn't make it past the poem. This story goes beyond supernatural monster that'll jump out to take you, and explores a more universal concept of human loss, suffering and pain that comes from losing the people you love. The protangonist, as well as the reader aren't in direct risk from Lankin, as long as you back away and let him take the smaller children, you personally will be spared. But the grief and guilt of survivng can drive you mad. So I read with the lights on, and when I finished I called my niece to hear about her band practice and debate team to pull myself back together. I'm glad i did make it past the poem.
