4.5 stars. It would have been 5 stars if it weren't for the 10 year old narrator's far too adult perceptions. If Mc Cleen had put Judith in the future narrating these events, it wouldn't have been a problem. Even a academically gifted 10 year old with an advanced grasp of language wouldn't be this emotionally advanced - especially given her very sheltered upbringing, which didn't even include TV.

Nevertheless, this story and it's characters are wonderful! I felt for both Judith and her father - still do. I understand how it is to be this fear-filled child, as well as her parent. Another benefit of making the narrator older would be that an epilogue could have been added. I was so invested in this story I yearned to know that Judith was OK, that she and her father had been able to adjust.

I highly recommend this story to everyone, no matter what their reading tastes.
