If you have ever done something, or fear that you will do something, so embarressing you think you may never be able to step into public again...this may not be the book for you. The main character is a bumbling man who continuoully does the wrong thing socially. He is so bumbling that it's funny and you find yourself laughing at him only to have dostoyevsky turn it around on the next page so that you feel sorry for him and ashamed for laughing. It's one of those book where I've actually felt like I had the experience of Catharsis as described by Aristotle in the Poetics. I went through so much sorrow and embaressment in the double that when I was done I felt a little better about my life. It's all about Perspective.
