Logan's life isn't perfect. She doesn't like her job or her apartment and her boyfriend is MIA most of the time. So when her singing star cousin Kelsey invites her to come visit, she jumps at the chance. And when it turns into a job offer, she's even happier. Because who WOULDN'T want a chance to live the sweet life? There's lots of travel and lots of great hotel rooms---and, as it turns out, a ton of stress and misery because Kelsey's parents are awful and her life is beyond insane.
Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus' books are hit and miss for me. I really liked Nanny Diaries and Dedication, was meh on The Real Real and disliked Citizen Girl. This one fell between Real Real and Citizen Girl for me. None of the characters are particularly likable (although Logan and Kelsey are the best of a bad lot) and Kelsey's parents especially are just hideously awful people who should just not be allowed to procreate at all.
Here's an example. Kelsey's sick and her dad encourages her to keep doing everything she needs to do (rehearse and perform, even though she has the flu). Okay, I can even grant you that it's a good work ethic and it's sweet to not disappoint fans. But when Kelsey asks her parents to sleep in Logan's room instead of hers because she's sick, they freak out and leave early the next morning, disappearing for at least weeks and possibly months (another complaint with this book---the timeline is a little confusing) without a word to their daughter. And yes, they live with Kelsey. (Who, incidentally, is a grownup.)
I was hoping this would be a fantastic beach read, but I was just disappointed with it.
