To Heaven and Back

by Mary C. Neal
The author's NDE (near death experience) takes up only a small portion of the book. Most of the book is devoted to a telling of her spiritual journey in life. I decided to read this book because I thought that she would spend more time describing her NDE. At first I was disappointed that she did not do this. But on further reflection I am glad that she did not do this because some of the things that she writes about concerning her NDE are more in line with New Age beliefs rather than with orthodox Christian teachings. It is my belief that some NDE's are truly of God while others are not. Too often people who write books about their NDE's tell about being given second chances to change their lives and return to tell other people of their experiences in the after life. The bible clearly teaches that it is appointed unto man once to die and after that comes the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). While I believe that God does give us second chances to change our sinful lives, He does not do so once we supposedly have experienced death. Therein lies my major criticism of the book. Having said as much I found the remainder of the book to be mildly rewarding. I would recommend the book to people who are seeking an light read and wish to be spiritually uplifted. I give the book two stars on a scale of five stars with five being the highest. Finally, I need to mention that I received this book free without cost to me from Waterbrook/Multnomah Publishers as part of an agreement to write an unbiased review of the book.
