A year or so ago my younger brother, Fin Einar, a long-time resident of southwestern Michigan and former Benton Harbor mailman, brought a pile of books about the region to our father, all of them purchased in St. Joseph. Now, while his wife in in Mississippi for a granddaughter's wedding and I'm staying with Dad, I'm going through as many of them as I can. They're mostly picture books, so it isn't very difficult

The family on Dad's side had been going up to Berrien County, MI since the beginning of WWI, maintaining a cottage in the woods near Lake Michigan from 1917 until recently. For the four generations of us who have spent the warmer months up there, and for my brother's branch of the family which settled there, Benton Harbor and St. Joseph were the big towns in the area, visited when one really needed something unobtainable in the smaller lakeside towns and villages.
