There is sometimes a strange lack of empathy to this book and often a lack of understanding of Korean culture. Esp. oddly, of South Korean culture and attitudes (current). When the empathy is there, the book flies. But when it is not, it's frustrating. It takes you (me) out of the book an makes it hard to stay immersed the way you (I) want to be in a novel.
