This is a beautifully written debut novel. Isabel is a newly wed who moves to a deserted island with her lighthouse keeper husband. After 2 miscarriages and a stillbirth, a baby and her dead father wash ashore. While Tom wants to report it, Isabel bonds immediately and sees the young baby as a gift from God. The actions they take, affect not only them, but also the devastated mother who is pining for her lost baby. 2 years later when they return to the mainland, these various orbits soon collide.

From time to time, I’d come across a sentence or paragraph that stopped me in my tracks, and I’d have to read it over several times to absorb its beauty of language.

This is the perfect book group book. Moral decisions and consequences abound. It’s complicated, layered, and it stayed with me for a long time. I couldn’t help but sympathize with each of the characters.
