** spoiler alert ** Danny Pickett is hunting down a lost bull for Mr. Haggin when he first lays eyes on Mr. Haggin's champion show dog. There is an instant connection between the 17-year-old boy and the big red setter. Mr. Haggin recognizes the connection and asks Danny if he would like to learn all about show dogs. Danny, of course, says yes, so Mr. Haggin hires Danny and starts to train him on showing dogs. Mr. Haggin also decides that while Red is not at a show he may stay with Danny and his father in there cabin in the Wintapi. While with Danny Red tracks Ol' Majesty, a bear that has been terrorizing the Wintapi wilderness for years, and fights him into a stand still. Danny almost shoots the bear but the bear would have fallen on top of Red so he does not. Red also defeats an Injun Devil (wolverine), and a fisher cat while out on the trap lines with Danny. Danny decided to make Red a hunting dog soon after he gets him but he does not want him to hunt varmints. He wants Red to be a bird dog. This causes some friction between Ross and Danny for a while until Red saves Ross's life by finding him in a snow drift in a snow storm. Then, one night Ross takes his three hounds and goes hunting for Ol' Majesty because he killed their mule. The next day Ross returns severly injured and tells Danny that Ol' Majesty attacked him and killed his three hounds, so Danny takes Red and hunts the bear down. Red fights Ol' Majesty into a stand still, but this time when Danny arrives at the scene Ol' Majesty attacks him and the dog. They end up killing the bear, but Red is severly injured with his body all clawed and bitten up and has one of his legs practically detached. Red survives but is to messed up to compete any more. So Mr. Haggin buys a female and they have pups, so Red is still useful.

I like this book because it is a good story.
