American Rust is a gritty page turner which follows the fortunes of a community in Buell. Buell is an American town in decline; the steel industry which once dominated the region has crumbled to dust leaving a town with high unemployment and very little hope. The novel begins with two unlikely friends taking a walk; this walk has consequences which affect both them and a number of other characters throughout the novel. As the story unfolds we are treated to chapters told from a number of characters’ points of view, we learn about their lives, loves and mistakes.

This is a gripping read which gave a scintillating view of how lives are affected by social and economic change.
