Thoughtful novella about artificial intelligence featuring most of Cat Valente's trademarks. Fairy-tale allusions, rich and beautiful prose, and a fine sense of tragedy. Unfortunately, what it doesn't really have is a character we can care about: Elefsis (the AI) is too vague and ill-defined a presence by nature, and the human characters are secondary and distant. This makes it less involving than it ought to be. Not by any means Valente's best work, though it's interesting to see her doing sci-fi rather than a fantasy.
