Judy Blume with a queer twist--and without so much internal dialogue ("Are You There God?"). The plot kicks off quickly; I think Laura gets kicked out of school and then home within about 30 pages, and it just keeps rolling from there.

Made me want to go to Miami. The city, and the Cuban barrios within it, are described really well; the city is like another character.
