** spoiler alert ** Ben and Chon (and most of the characters in Savages) are back and the results are pleasantly surprising. I was skeptical about a prequel, but this was actually really good; a super fun beach read that sets up all of the pieces for the main event. The climax and denouement are a bit weaker than the rest of the novel, but I guess with a prequel that's not too bad of a thing, especially when you know what's coming. Even though this is a prequel, I would definitely do what I did and read Savages first and then this one. I read them both within a month (and saw the Oliver Stone-directed film) and I have to say, I will miss these characters.
