Peter Grant is back and together with Lesley he gets involved in a murder which was commited underground with a shard from a plate with magical properties. While this is being accepted by the regular Metropolitan police superiours they are not to happy about it. Especially when the victim turns out to be the son of a US senator, who comes to England in person as does a female agent from the FBI who does her business not quite the way that is being expected when one is a guest in another country. Peter must balance his actions with the regular police, his Master, Tyburn the Godess, Lesley and the US Guests.
Once again a tour de force by mr. Aaronovitch, in writing an exciting story of murder, magic & London ambiance and history. ANd if there is one thing that the writer is not lazy with is showing how much he knows about London and its history. WHile it is sometimes overwhelming it does give quite a lot of flavor to the story.
Having seen recent documentaries about the world under London the writer does tell us some more and is quite brave in going there while not making a predictable tale.
I have really enjoyed all three books so far and in each one you see the growth of its main character, even if it is just 1 year according to this book since he entered the special department.
Lets hope that the next book in this series does not take so long as this one to get released.
