** spoiler alert ** For sheer readability, four stars. I stayed up late reading each night and when I should have been doing other things. The information on wolves was fascinating. In notes at the end she references a wolf expert, so I hope everything I've now learned about wolf behavior in the book is true. Interesting characters for sure, and I didn't even mind the "hints of major secrets that will be exposed toward the end" that were sprinkled throughout. But the thrust of the book, this legal battle between siblings over guardianship, was contrived. The father has been in the hospital in a vegetative state for only 13 days. Even in a small town in NH, I'm not sure a court case could have been scheduled and completed in that amount of time. And it makes absolutely no sense that the one character would insist on pulling the plug in that time frame, saying there's no hope, when it would be just as easy to say, sure, let's give it six months -- especially considering that the father reacted to one person's voice, opened his eyes, and tracked the person's movement. Likely giving him more time wouldn't have resulted in a "miracle" recovery, but considering he likely would have died of pneumonia on the machines anyway and that the science (and diagnoses) in this field seem to be changing quite a bit recently, it's the rush pull the plug seems is really odd. But still thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
