I just couldn't get into this tale of a young English girl's romance during a brief stay with friends in occupied Ireland of the 1920s. None of the many relationships and intertwinings of the Irish and British seemed believable or real; even the dialogue seemed absurdly stilted and convoluted, not the way you would expect people of that era to actually talk. There was a poignancy here, of the British, either insufferably condescending or superior-feeling, and the often too-complacent Irish, that never materialized.
