Lark lives in a city powered by energy harvested from its children. Once a person is harvested, they are given a role in society. Lark has been waiting for years to be harvested, but when her turn comes about, something isn't right. She learns that some people are renewable - their energy can be harvested over and over to be used by the city. In desperation, Lark leaves her city hoping to find a better fate.

This is an enjoyable read that many middle/high school kids will enjoy. There are plenty of plot twists, and the author does a good job of immersing the reader in Lark's world.
