Sometimes a book comes across so simple that I feel like I'm missing something, and that is how I felt when I finished Jim the Boy. Early writes beautifully as he shares a simple slice of life from the depression-era in a small town in the East, though perhaps too simply on the level of elemental construction to really reach the reader deeply. As our lives often don't have a "plot", I'm not bothered by the lack of plot, as this is just the portrayal of one year of a boy's life and some of the big moments in it that open his eyes and heart, as well as narrow them. So I appreciate Jim boy's tender awakening from his insulated life experience and enjoyed reading the book; however, as a whole this story was not as evocative for me as some other coming of age stories I have read.
