1968 - Doug Swieteck, soon to be 8th grader, and his family move to Marysville NY after his father lost his job. The first person he meets is Lil Spicer, daughter of the local deli owner and his same age. The transition is tough, teachers pre-judge Doug, and Doug's father is not exactly father of the year material. Doug finds a friend in the local librarian who has an original set of Audubon books with bird plates. It took a bit to get used to 8th grader speak, but it grows on you. Everyone is a chump or a jerk, the house they live in is the dump, etc. But the story was great, and it was fun to see Doug and the other characters change over the course of the book.
