This is a well-written novel about two families in turn-of-the-century London who own adjoining cemetery plots. Differing in social class and taste, the families lives are intertwined by the friendship of their little girls. Themes include changing mores and attitudes, particularly with regard to women's rights, during this time of rapid change toward modernism. However, strong traditions are in evidence, especially regarding mourning. Major events center on the cemetery, a place of mourning, but also of play, enjoyment of the air, sky, flowers. What happens there will have long term consequences for both families, as well as those of the gravediggers!
