A true/untrue/partly true, I guess, account of the Ned Kelly Gang -- Ned Kelly being Australia's Robin Hood, from what I gather from the book. The character of Ned is developed brilliantly, the style of the supposed writer, a semi-literate farmer in Australia in the 19th century, is brilliant. It was also an engrossing read. The only drawback to it was that I was not sure whether the story was true, and sometimes I got disoriented geographically, which was confusing. The impact of the poverty and injustice that the descendants of deported English and Irishmen suffered in Australia was devastating, and conveyed gradually and powerfully. We forget how close to starvation and ruin hardscrabble farmers lived. A book well worth reading for many reasons.
